South Luangwa National Park

The South Luangwa National Park is situated in Zambia’s renowned Luangwa Valley, at the tail end of the Great Rift Valley. It boasts one of Africa’s highest game concentrations, around the river, and was the pioneering locale for walking safaris’s still one of the best ways to experience true African wilderness (between June to September). Founded in 1938, South Luangwa was declared a National Park in 1972, and this 9050km zone is now one of the most accessible and popular parks in Zambia. The terrain consists of dense woodlands, oxbow pools, floodplains and patches of grassland. The valley is dependent on the Luangwa River, a major river system which supports the area’s large buffalo and elephant herds, Thornicroft giraffe, plains game and prolific birdlife. Cookson’s Wildebeest and Crawshay’s Zebra are endemic to the area, and the brightly coloured migratory birds, and bird of prey from as far afield as the Russian steppes draw visitors throughout the year. Hippo and crocodiles dominate the waters, and on the steep sandy banks, the fascinating carmine bee-eaters busily dart in and out of their nests. The luxuriant greenery of Zambia’s winters has led to the rainy period being dubbed the “emerald season.” Dry summers provide superb game-viewing, and create a balance to the winters, and a clear distinction between seasons.South Luangwa affords a wide range of accommodation styles, from modest tented camps, rustic, authentic bush camps and 5 star luxury – all to be enjoyed in an unforgettable safari experience.

Days 2 – 4: South Luangwa National Park

On Safari: South Luangwa

The dynamic Luangwa River dominates the landscape, cutting through the heart of the Luangwa Valley, in this paradise. Dry season game viewing is intense, with huge pods of hippo and an abundance of wildlife on the riverbank. Leopard sightings are prolific, and there is a healthy population of wild dog and superb birdlife. Ideally start your day with a sunrise guided bush walk, or an early morning game drive, at the time when animals are most active. Rest up back at camp during the midday heat. In the late afternoon, head out again on safari vehicle, or walking, in search of the creatures which start to move about as night closes in. If the option is available, a river safari is a terrific way to appreciate the sunset. Evenings are spent listening to nocturnal animals and stargazing.
